Inspired by my mother's stories about the language barrier and cultural differences that she sees when coming to America, this painting features a woman standing in a sea of umbrellas, only hers being a red. Her's is different, bold and confident yet unique and not belonging. She's isolated despite the many people that surround her. I chose red because it is a lucky color and it's also very bold. I chose umbrellas because it shelters her. She's far from the viewers point because I wanted to make her feel distant since I personally yearn to have such confidence. She's faceless because I had many inspirational people I'd thought of when creating this piece, and really, everyone could be in her shoes.
