Tales of an Immigrant Mother Honorable Mention

At a point of art block and dissatisfaction with my cultural knowledge, learning about S?n mài was a breakthrough to all aspects of my identity. I was inspired by artists such as Nguy?n Gia Trí, who pioneered the Vietnamese lacquer painting genre. Similar to his work, I wanted to create a piece that told a story. "Tales of an Immigrant Mother" shares a piece of my family that speaks to the diaspora, even those who aren't of Vietnamese descent. Knowing the journey my grandparents and parents have gone through to establish a new part of history is admirable. My piece is a story in multiple phases: war, escape, and rebirth.
